Ordering a salad from a pizza place attracts a certain amount of gentle mockery, and most of it is unfair. Not everyone at the table wants pizza, and a prepared salad that arrives with the rest of the order is a reasonable solution to that problem.

What you get is straightforward: mixed greens as a base, with tomato, cucumber, red onion, shredded carrot and cheddar distributed through. Dressing comes separately in a packet, which is the correct approach — a pre-dressed salad in a delivery bag arrives as a wilted mess.

The honest assessment

It's a fine salad. It isn't a great one. The greens are pre-cut and packed, the vegetables are cut for shelf life rather than peak texture, and it's assembled in a pizza kitchen rather than a salad station. Judged against a restaurant salad it falls short. Judged against the alternative of that person eating nothing, it does its job.

Where the calories hide

The salad itself is genuinely light — greens and raw vegetables, plus a modest amount of cheese. The dressing packet is where it changes. A full ranch or Caesar packet can carry more calories than everything else in the bowl combined, and often more fat than a slice of pizza. Using half the packet, or asking for a vinaigrette instead, keeps the item honest.

Practical ordering

Salads travel fine as long as they're kept away from hot items, which is not always guaranteed in a delivery bag. If you're ordering one alongside pizza, it's worth a note asking for it to be bagged separately. A salad that's spent twenty-five minutes pressed against a hot pizza box is not what anyone wanted.

Add grilled chicken if it's available — it turns a side into an actual meal and it's usually a couple of dollars.

Classic Garden Salad: your questions answered

Around 180 for the salad itself, which is genuinely light. The dressing packet is the variable — a full ranch or Caesar packet can add more calories than everything else in the bowl combined. Using half, or choosing a vinaigrette, keeps it moderate.

More from the salads menu

The pizza every other pizza gets compared to. Tomato sauce, a generous mozzarella layer and enough pepperoni to curl and crisp at the edges under the oven's heat.

A ring of mozzarella baked into the outer edge so the crust stops being the part you leave behind. Straightforward cheese and sauce across the top.
